Electroless Nickel (EN) Plating
Controlled Surface Engineering
Millennium provides Electroless Nickel (EN) plating services for precision components requiring exceptional corrosion resistance, uniform thickness, and high wear durability. Our chemical plating process is engineered and maintained to deliver repeatable, verifiable results across complex geometries and critical tolerances.
EN plating utilizes autocatalytic chemical reaction to deposit a uniform layer of nickel-phosphorus allow directly onto the substrate. Unlike conventional electroplating, this liquid-matrix process requires no electrical current, ensuring complete coverage of internal diameters, blind holes, and intricate features.
Why Electroless Nickel Plating
Advantage Over Conventional Electroplating
– Perfect thickness uniformity: Eliminates the “edge build-up” and uneven distribution typical of current-dependent plating
– Superior corrosion defense: Forms a dense, non-porous barrier that excels in highly corrosive chemical and marine environments
– Low friction and galling: Provides a smooth, lubricious surface that reduces wear on moving mechanical assemblies
– Flexible substrate bonding: Applies reliably to a wide range of materials, including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, and copper alloys
Advantage Over Raw or Uncoated Metals
– Adjustable hardness properties: Offers high as-plated hardness, which can be further increased up to 1100 HV via precise heat treatment
– Excellent chemical resistance: Withstands exposure to hydrocarbons, acids, and alkaline solutions common in industrial processes
– Salvage of worn components: Allows for the precise restoration of undersized or worn parts back to original dimensional specifications
Controlled Manufacturing Process
All EN plating is performed under documented quality management procedures:
– Incoming inspection: Visual assessment and dimensional verification of all client components
– Automated pre-treatment: Multi-stage chemical cleaning and micro-etching to ensure maximum metallurgical adhesion
– Controlled bath chemistry: Continuous monitoring of temperature, pH, and nickel-phosphorus concentration for deposit consistency
– Post-plate baking: Optional thermal processing to optimize coating hardness and relieve hydrogen embrittlement
– Final quality assurance: Verification of coating thickness, adhesion strength, and surface finish using calibrated inspection equipment
Conformity, traceability, and repeatability are maintained throughout the process.
